Nengmao Store won over a lot of fans with its retro decor and a vast collection of vintage toys when it first opened in an old warehouse on Wanhang Du Lu two years ago. So it came as a shock when it was closed last year. However, this indie store is now making a comeback, so get ready, Shanghai!

Good news is the new location is much more central, and bad news is it doesn't have the cool warehouse look any more. It's hidden down a lane close to Parkson on Shaanxi Nan Lu - you will spot it once you see a light green bench in front of the store. There is a display of vintage toys and goodies at the entrance, like rusty thermos flasks and old car models. The store itself is also decorated in the retro style; come here if you want to know what a dining hall looked like in the 80's in China. It's an updated version.though with its wooden floor and leather sofa.

You'll discover the small collection designed by store owner Xixi on the shelves, including coats, T-shirts and bags. All of them are unisex and inspired by the fashion from the 80's in China. The black 'Shanghai' handbag (389rmb), for example, is a tribute to the highly popular bag made in Shanghai more than two decades ago. The 'China' coat (298rmb) is also a smart copy of the track suits which were omnipresent in the 80's. There are also a range of enamel bowls and mugs available which were made in the 90's.

It's a pity that the new home of Nengmao Store is much smaller and less accomodating than the old one, but you can still spend some time here apart from just shopping, be it playing old Nintendo video games on the black and white TV or lounging with your friends on the sofa.
