MAT AND BALL
Mat and Ball

We can work it out. By Emma Chi.
Not so long ago, Pilates was a mysterious art-form practiced by A-list celebrities for whom yoga was no longer sufficiently niche. But, in turn, Pilates has found its way into the mainstream and is becoming increasingly popular. A full body work-out using mats, balls and various stretching techniques, Pilates will tone you up and improve your posture and balance. So, if you want a better body without breaking a sweat, try one of the courses we've picked out. But be warned – some yearly memberships are spine-numbingly pricey. Check out individual and trial classes before you commit.
Pilates Basic
Newcomers to Pilates should start here. As the name suggests, it’s suitable for beginners, and shows you the basics of stretching and flexing.
Price: ¥200 for one class
Class size: 10 people
Available at: Yoga Shala
Pilates Mat
California Fitness’s contribution to the Pilates pantheon is designed to strengthen muscles and build a toned physique. This is one of the more expensive options, but it comes with extras. Instructors offer nutrition advice along with fitness tips.
Price: ¥9,888 yearly membership, including all courses
Class size: 15 to 20 people
Available at: California Fitness
Hot Pilates
We said Pilates wouldn’t make you sweat. We lied. This class involves the usual lengthening and strengthening, but with the added bonus of 40 degree heat. Apparently, whacking the temperature up increases blood circulation and flexibility, and makes you burn more calories. Cool.
Price: ¥180 for one class (membership available by appointment)
Class size: 4 to 6 people
Available at: Eternity Fitness
Group Reformer
Small group numbers make this class feel more like a workshop. Hundreds of exercises for all levels, designed to improve posture, flexibility, and co-ordination. BodyWorks offer several Pilates classes but the Group Reformer tops the bill for variety and results.
Price: ¥150 for a trial class, ¥7,800 yearly membership
Class size: Maximum of 5 people
Available at: BodyWorks Pilates Studio
Pilates Ball
If you’ve ever wondered what those giant beach balls at the gym are for, this is how to find out. This class will have you bending, balancing and generally draping yourself over them in the pursuit of muscular nirvana. Ball-style Pilates is the type to try if you want to tone up your waist and legs.
Price: ¥1,800 yearly membership, including a wide variety of courses
Class size: Maximum of 30 people
Available at: BestFit
