New & Noted: Dec 12
A few notes on this week’s feature, the 50 Things to Eat story. First, it’s not a ranking. It’s just my 50 favorite things to eat in Shanghai, for the year of 2008. It’s reflective of my tastes, which is my second point: it’s not healthy at all. There’s only one dessert; I usually abstain, unless it’s Charmant.

It is nothing but the rumors only.

The SH Staff shop for toaster ovens. Taobao wins. Best Buy keeps their toaster ovens in the faux-kitchen section, with the premium kitchen appliances.

A new, high, high-end sushi place is in the works above El Willy. It’ll be tiny – 14 seats, I believe – and the prices will be as high as the quality. Estimates now are in the high three figures (per person), justifiable considering the level of the sushi, which I’ll vouch for.

Jean Georges is making some changes. He’s snapping his Shanghai restaurant into line with Jean Georges New York, which means adding a casual attachment: Nougatine. That’s now the name of the lounge area you pass through on your way to the dining room.

Coco Curry has burned me twice in the last month. Both times a craving for a thick, Japanese curry led me to basement of Jiu Guang in search of said brown-and-white plate, and both times I was rebuffed by the stretched plastic covering of renovation.
