AFTER HOURS: SHELTER BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
After Hours: Shelter Birthday Celebrations
December 1st, 2008With an honorable mention to the Bananas gang (it's been a while, we missed you), nightlife was a little quiet last weekend. However, tonight sees the launch party for a whole month of first birthday celebrations at The Shelter, with a procession of big name DJs and quality events. At the launch party itself, each of the resident music crews – The Lab, Uprooted Sunshine, Antidote, Sweatshop, and Void – will be given an hour to provide entertainment to the masses. But Thursday's events are just the beginning. While there's far too much going on to list it all, here are a few highlights to look out for.
DJ Co-ma
You don't pick up a DMC title without being pretty spectacular on the decks. DJ Co-ma has three of them – two consecutive national championship victories in his native Japan, and the 2006 international crown. Initially focusing on drum 'n' bass, Co-ma is becoming well-known for his use of a broad range of music, while his technical wizardry has established his reputation as one of the most innovative DJs of his generation.
Friday December 5, 9pm-late.
DJ Babu
The Turntablist, as he's appropriately nicknamed, has been one of the foremost hip hop DJs of the last decade. As well as being part of the internationally renowned Beat Junkies crew, he's also manned the decks for massively influential L.A. hip hoppers Dilated Peoples. While he's moved towards more production-based projects in recent years, Babu still scratches and mixes with the best of them, and it's his immense skill on the decks that will be on show when he comes to town.
Friday December 12, 9pm-late.
Harmonic 313
If the name Mark Pritchard isn't familiar, you might know him better by one of the 21 aliases he's used during an illustrious career spanning hip hop, dancehall, techno, and everything in between. As one half of Global Communication and the Jedi Knights, Pritchard has been behind some of the most ground-breaking dance records of the last 10 years. His new Harmonic 313 project has more of a hip hop focus, but don't be surprised if his natural eclecticism comes to the fore. Look out for an interview in issue 201 of SH.
Saturday December 13, 9pm-late.
