60 Seconds: B6

November 12th, 2008

Local IDM hero B6 has a new album out on Modern Sky Records. SH caught up with him before the Post Haze launch party at The Shelter on Nov 15.

SH: The music?
B6: I try to present my personal view about life in the future and the past. The future and the past mixed together make me eternally excited.

SH: The new album?
B6:
Post Haze will be the first minimal-techno album ever released in China. It promises to be a landmark on China's independent music scene.

SH: IGO or solo?
B6:
Solo. When I play solo, I can control everything musically. With IGO we still work independently but it’s different. JJay writes the songs and lyrics, and I do all the instrumental programming and play with the studio tricks.

SH: Other Chinese artists?
B6:
Right now I’m listening to Liman’s debut EP and ReTROS’s new album.

SH: Major influences?
B6:
Wen Jiabao.

SH: Music or graphic design?
B6:
At the moment, I'd definitely choose music because it's the best way to express my ideas. Graphic designers are in every corner of the city. You can call yourself a graphic designer if you know how to use Photoshop. I just want to be more individual.

SH: Shanghai or Beijing?
B6:
You’re asking a hardcore Shanghainese like me?
