LITERATURE: THE SHANGHAI LITERARY FESTIVAL

Since 2002, the Shanghai Literary Festival (SILF) has been going from strength to strength, attracting writers like Amy Tan, Gore Vidal, Jancis Robinson, and Arundhati Roy. Now in its eighth year, the festival spans three weekends in March, and brings another raft of authors to the city to talk about their work.
The festival takes place at the Glamour Bar and the Crystal Room at M on the Bund. It kicks off on Friday March 6th with an opening session (between 7.30 and 9pm) during which you can mix with the authors and fellow literature lovers over a glass of wine. Highlights of the three weekends’ events include Shanghai-based writer Kristin Bair O’Keeffe whose debut novel “Thirsty” was published last year. Kristin is well known for her blog about life in Shanghai, and will give a talk entitled “Shameless Self Promotion and the Art of Social Networking for Authors” (Sunday March 7th at 12pm) - useful for any would-be writers. The panel talk “Framing Queer Asia: Cultural and Legal Perspectives” (Saturday 6th March at 5pm) sounds interesting too – a discussion about where China stands on gay rights and equality.

On Sunday 21st March at 1pm, author of “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, Louis de Bernieres, will be speaking on the language of music, and Filipino writer José Dalisay will talk about the literature of his homeland on Sunday 14th March (2pm).
